Plumbing Tips and Prevention: How to prevent a “fatberg” in your pipes
We didn’t coin the name, but it’s kind of catchy.
A “fatberg” is a disgusting ball of – well, grease, wet wipes, and anything else that attaches itself and lodges in your sewer pipe.
Let that image go, and let’s talk about how to prevent it from happening.
- Do not put grease into your kitchen sink or any other drain for that matter. It is a leading cause of sewer blockages and can result in creating a dreaded fatberg.
- Do not flush wet wipes down the toilets. Despite the marketing claims, they do not disintegrate like traditional toilet paper.
- Run your sink’s disposal regularly. Please do not wait until it builds up. And use plenty of water, running it for at least 20 seconds to ensure that the food scraps get washed down the drain. (See more plumbing prevention tips here)
