A leak at the bottom of your water heater can be alarming, but often has an easy solution.

Understanding the Problem

At the bottom of the water heater, there are two possible places for a leak:

• The drain valve – the spigot at the bottom where hoses can be attached and from which water drains

• The tank of the water heater

If the drain valve is leaking, then a plumber can take care of the problem by replacing the drain valve – a relatively inexpensive and an easy procedure.

If the leak is coming from the tank, then you may have a more serious problem. For the tank to leak, there may be a large amount of sediment buildup at the bottom, which can corrode the tank over time.

Fixing the Problem

Before you take any action, shut off the water as well as the gas or electrical circuit (depending on how your water heater is powered). 

Do not touch the water heater, as the unit can be very hot. After you have done so, contact a plumber to carry out the fix or install a new water heater.
