Plumbing and Prevention: Treating a Clogged Bathroom Drain

There are some simple ways you can keep your bathroom drains flowing smoothly. And you don’t even need to use harsh chemicals.

Remember those baking soda and vinegar volcanoes you made when you were a kid? This can be an effective way to treat and even unclog your bathroom sink. All it takes is hot water, baking soda, and vinegar.

First, pour in several cups of boiling water to loosen any debris. Next, pour about ½ cup of baking soda over and around the drain, followed by one cup of white vinegar. Let the fizzing begin. Let it stand at least 5 to 10 minutes. Then pour more hot water down the drain to clear the clog. Repeat as necessary.

Try a sink plunger

We all know a toilet plunger works wonders to fix a clogged toilet. Did you know you can also use a smaller sink plunger to unclog a bathroom drain?

It’s the same process. Just make sure the water level in the sink is above the drain to create proper suction – and start plunging. Very often, this will release that stubborn clog of hair and soap without needing to call a plumber or use harsh chemicals. (See how to prevent a “fatberg” in your pipes)
