Is It Time to Replace Your Garbage Disposal?

Like anything else in your house, garbage disposals wear out over time. But when is it necessary to replace it? That depends on how old it is and how it’s been treated over the years.

If you routinely do some basic things like run cold water through it after you use it and keep large pieces of food or known “cloggers” like coffee grounds away from it, a disposal can last many years.

So what are the signs that it’s time for a new garbage disposal?

You have to hit the ‘reset’ button on the garbage disposal frequently. This is a sign that the motor could be failing, and it may soon be time to replace the garbage disposal.

Food odors are coming from the garbage disposal. If you’ve treated your sink for odors and still smell them, it may be a sign that something is not functioning correctly, and food is trapped in the drain lines or unit.

Frequent clogging may indicate that the disposal is not functioning properly or that the blades have dulled over time.

You are replacing the kitchen sink or dishwasher. If you are updating appliances and your disposal is getting old, it may make sense to get a new one. (Especially if you’ve already got a plumber coming out to handle the other jobs.)
