Signs It May Be Time to Replace Your Water Heater

A water heater is something most homeowners don’t think a lot about. It sits in the garage or basement and provides the hot water for the household.

But your water heater can cause significant problems if not replaced at the end of its life span.

Here are five signs it may be time to replace your water heater.

Your water has a metallic taste and smell. If your hot water has a metallic smell and taste, this may signals that flakes of metal are being broken down inside the appliance and mixing into the hot water supply.

Your water heater is making strange noises. When water heaters begin making noises – specifically crackling and popping sounds – minerals have probably built up between the inner heater and heating elements.

Your water heater is leaking. If you find water pooling around the water heater, this is most likely a sign that the inner tank is at the end of its lifespan. Gradual leaks can manifest into a severe flood if the tank breaks.

The water is muddy and sandy. Muddy or sandy hot water is a telltale indicator of sediment building up in the water heater. To alleviate this problem, contact a professional to check and drain the water heater tank for you.

You are receiving warm, but not hot water. Receiving warm but not hot water could mean that the heating element in your water heater is nearing the end of its lifespan. To confirm this is a problem with the heating element, make sure the temperature of your water heater is somewhere between 120 and 140 degrees or have a professional check it out.
